How to Maintain a Silk Press
By Bella Garcia · · 4 min read
A fresh silk press feels light, smooth, and full of movement. Keeping it that way is mostly about what you do in the days after. With good habits, many clients get one to two weeks out of their press, sometimes more. Here's the routine we recommend.
What a silk press is (and why it needs care)
Our silk press is a premium straightening style. It starts with a detoxifying wash to clear buildup, followed by a blowdry, and then the hair is straightened with a hot comb. No chemicals are involved, so your natural texture comes back as soon as water, sweat, or humidity gets in. That's why aftercare is all about keeping moisture out, cutting friction, and not overloading on product.
If you're still deciding whether this is the right service, see how a press compares to a standard wash and blowdry.
Night one sets the tone
Most reversion and frizz happens while you sleep. Cotton pillowcases rough up the hair, and tossing and turning bends the shape.
- Wrap it. Comb your hair around your head in one direction and tie it down with a silk or satin scarf. Alternate the direction each night so you don't create a part line.
- Add a bonnet or satin pillowcase. Even if you wrap, a smooth surface underneath is a second layer of protection.
- Want bounce? Loose pin curls or large rollers overnight add movement without more heat.
In the morning, take the wrap down, shake the hair out with your fingers, and comb lightly. Don't brush hard on the first few days.
Keep water and humidity out
Moisture is the one thing a press can't handle.
- Wear a shower cap every time, and keep showers short and the door cracked to cut steam.
- Keep a compact umbrella in your bag.
- On muggy days, wear it in a loose low bun or a soft braid so the hair stays compact.
- Skip pools, steam rooms, saunas, and hot tubs while you want to keep the press.
- Be careful with skincare. Face mists and heavy moisturizers near the hairline can revert your edges.
Our climate is dry most of the year, which helps. Still, warm afternoons and the occasional humid week can puff up the roots and nape.
Working out with a silk press
You don't have to stop exercising, but sweat will revert the hairline and the back of the neck first.
- Tie a satin-lined headband or scarf around your edges before you start.
- Pull hair up loosely so it isn't pressed against your neck.
- Afterward, let your scalp air out and cool down, then rewrap.
- If you can, schedule harder workouts toward the end of your press cycle.
Daily intense workouts will shorten how long a press lasts. That's normal, not a sign anything went wrong.
Go easy on products
It's tempting to add oil for shine. Too much weighs the hair down and makes it look stringy by day four. If your ends feel dry, use a drop of lightweight serum on the ends only. Avoid water-based sprays and leave-ins entirely, since they bring back texture.
If your scalp gets oily before wash day, a light mist of dry shampoo right at the roots can buy you a few days.
Limit extra heat
You shouldn't need to flat iron every morning after a press. Repeated heat can dry hair out and, over time, loosen your natural curl pattern so it doesn't spring back the way it used to. If one section needs help, use a heat protectant, keep the temperature moderate, and make one or two passes at most. Our walkthrough on picking and applying a heat protectant covers what to look for.
Wash day and what comes next
Most people wash their press out after one to two weeks, or sooner if the scalp starts itching or the hair feels heavy. Leaving it in too long can lead to buildup and dryness. When it's time:
- Wash gently and deep condition.
- Give your curls some time in their natural texture before your next press.
- Book your next press with some space in between, so your hair isn't under heat back to back.
Regular trims help too. Split ends stand out on straight hair. Our tips on spacing trims to keep ends healthy can help you plan.
Booking a silk press with us
Our silk press is $110 and takes about 1 hr 45 mins. Arrive detangled and without heavy oils or gel so the detox wash can do its job. If your scalp tends to get itchy partway through a press, a scalp treatment ($35) can be added to the appointment. We're in El Monte and book online only. Questions about whether a press suits your hair? Send us a photo and your hair history.
FAQ
How long does a silk press usually last?
Many clients get one to two weeks, depending on texture, humidity, how often they work out, and how well the hair is wrapped at night.
Do you use a flat iron or a hot comb for a silk press?
We do ours with a detoxifying wash and blowdry first, then a hot comb to straighten.
What should I do if my edges revert?
Keep edges wrapped and dry, especially during workouts. If they revert, smooth them with a soft brush and a little edge product until wash day, or do a single low-heat pass with heat protectant.
